After a while, people began to be suspicious of each other and worried that they, too, might be accused, which led to "hysteria." First, look up the definition of hysteria in a dictionary and write it in your journal. Next, choose one of the following questions and answer thoroughly with complete sentences: 1. Have you ever been falsely accused of something? If so, describe what happened and how you felt. 2. Have you ever had a bad first impression about someone and then later found out you were wrong? Explain. 3. Have you ever been so afraid of something that you became a little hysterical? Explain. (You will not have to share your answers with the class.)

A "5 Senses Description" is another way for more seasoned writers to "Dress Up" their writing. By adding sensory details, the writer engages the reader and provides more description. A "5 Sensory Description" moves from simply telling the reader what happened to showing them by including sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and/or textures. Students do not need to incorporate all 5 senses into their description. The IEW method teaches the students to "show, don't tell" and to use sensory language rather than making a general statement. Here's and example:

Tell: The forest was spooky.

Show: Broken branches littered the ground and cobwebs clung to the damp bark. A single owl hooted, and the wind whispered through the hollow trees."

Students only have to use one "5 Senses Description" in this composition. Hopefully, that will help you and your student when they begin writing their Final Draft next Wednesday:). I will review this with the students on Tuesday as well, and give them a sheet of  5 Senses Words they can use:).

Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV)

My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight
    and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Then you will understand what is right and just
    and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
    and understanding will guard you.
