BIBLE/VIRTUES:
This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of respect and courage. As we continue to study the Proverbs, we will gain an understanding of what it means to fear the Lord. He is worthy of the highest honor, respect, and reverence. Yet He also tells us to show proper respect to everyone. One of the habits of the heart that we regularly focus on at Fortis is respect, and the definition we use is "Valuing others more than self." We extend this to include showing respect to the building we are blessed to use, the supplies we share, the belongings of others, and the world God created!
In our history studies, we will learn about the incredible courage it took the colonists to leave the safety and comforts of life in Europe to establish settlements in a strange land. They faced myriad challenges, including hunger, illness, and death, yet they believed it was worth the risk to be able to worship and honor God in the way they believed to be right.
MATH:
- Review addition and subtraction of fractions.
- Divide two whole numbers and express the remainder as a fraction or mixed number.
- Add and subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators.
- Practice adding and subtracting fractions.
- Improve speed and accuracy of math facts.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words ending with IVE.
- Learn to spell words ending in TURE.
GRAMMAR:
- Continue memorizing common prepositions.
- Classify, compose, and diagram pattern 1 sentences that include prepositional phrases.
- Identify and classify pronouns in pattern 1 sentences.
- To recognize subject pronouns, as well as the understood subject pronoun “you” in imperative sentences.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words and be able to correctly use them in an original sentence and incorporate them into compositions.
- To use a dictionary to find parts of speech, definitions, word etymology, synonyms and antonyms, other word forms, and to practice alphabetization skills.
- To recognize and use several different kinds of dramatic openers/hooks– including questions, quotes, shocking statements, statistics/facts, and fragments–in writing.
- Summarize a passage through oral narration using great detail.
- Expand vocabulary.
- Identify virtues, as well as elements of truth, beauty and goodness, in reading passages and engage in meaningful discussions about them.
LATIN:
- Review previously learned concepts to prepare for upcoming test.
LATIN TEST: The test will include all vocabulary words (with a word bank), maxims, and charts from lessons 1-4. Charts will be partially filled in, and students will need to complete them. Teaching students to recognize the patterns in the chart and to use the headings of first, second, or third person and singular/plural will help them figure out what goes in each box, even if they haven't memorized the charts completely. Students will also need to know the four principal parts of a verb: 1. present, 2. infinitive, 3. perfect, 4. passive participle or supine; what every Latin verb has (person, number, tense) and what every Latin noun has (case, number, gender).
HISTORY:
- Recognize and describe the differences between the Pilgrims (Separatists) and Puritans.
- Compare and contrast historical figures using a Venn diagram.
- Recognize the hand of God in the life of Squanto.
SCIENCE:
- Describe the three types of muscles--smooth, cardiac, and skeletal--and which types are voluntary and involuntary.
- Identify key facts in and take notes from a non-fiction text.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Continue memorizing the names and locations of the islands in the West Indies.
- To know the meaning of the term "archipelago."
- To identify and label the locations of the Virginia and Massachusetts colonies, as well as the approximate locations of the Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay settlements, on a 13 Colonies map.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We'll continue memorizing the names and locations of some countries in the West Indies. A hard copy of this map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the corresponding song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 21 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond.

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV).
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
