Dear Parents,

As I am sure you have noticed, our Bible Study Booklet went off course last week and is now off by ONE day and will be for the remainder of the booklet. I thought I corrected all the weeks for the T/TH class before they were printed, but apparently I did not. Yikes! I don't want to waste paper by reprinting this set of booklets, so if you would just cross off the day and write in the correct one, I would greatly appreciate it. I will make sure the second set of booklets have all the correct dates for you.

The students and I had so much fun reviewing for their Latin Unit Test yesterday. We played a game in class where they competed against each other and earned points for their team if they were the first player to give me the English translation of the Latin I word I said. The class, as a whole, did so well, and with a little more studying, I have no doubt they will all do well on the Unit Test. In addition, I had them complete a study sheet to bring home that will help them study for the other parts of the test mentioned in last week's blog. (e.g. 4 parts of a verb)

This class continues to amaze me each and every week. Yesterday, they exhibited such incredible comaraderie and good sportsmanship during our game that I gave them each a turn reaching into our reward jar. They were shaking hands before they battled to see who could ring the bell first, complimented each other when they got the word right, and said, "good try," when someone got the word wrong. There was no yelling or arguing or making anyone feel bad because they didn't know the words. Wow! This class is so loving and kind to each other. They make me so proud to be their teacher, and I feel blessed to spend two days a week with them at Fortis. They exhibit perfectly Jesus's second greatest commandment: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:37-40

P.S. Parent/Teacher Conferences are optional for students meeting or exceeding grade level material and standards. If I don't contact you and ask you to set up a meeting with me, it is because your student is doing very well and there is no need. However, if you would still like to have one, I'd be more than happy to meet with you. I will be setting up conferences the week of October 6th and will email you next week if we need to set something up.

BIBLE/VIRTUES:

This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of respect and courage. As we continue to study the Proverbs, we will gain an understanding of what it means to fear the Lord. He is worthy of the highest honor, respect, and reverence. Yet He also tells us to show proper respect to everyone. One of the habits of the heart that we regularly focus on at Fortis is respect, and the definition we use is "Valuing others more than self." We extend this to include showing respect to the building we are blessed to use, the supplies we share, the belongings of others, and the world God created!

In our history studies, we will learn about the incredible courage it took the colonists to leave the safety and comforts of life in Europe to establish settlements in a strange land. They faced myriad challenges, including hunger, illness, and death, yet they believed it was worth the risk to be able to worship and honor God in the way they believed to be right.

MATH:

To add a mixed number and a fraction with unlike denominators.
To add mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
To subtract a fraction from a mixed number or whole number.
To subtract a mixed number from a mixed number or whole number.
To practice adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
To improve speed and accuracy of addition facts.

SPELLING:

To describe the events that led to the Salem witch trials.
To know that the colonists considered themselves to be British citizens who were loyal to the English crown, but that sentiment gradually began to change.
To describe the First Great Awakening and know the contributions of Edwards and Whitefield.

SCIENCE:

Begin learning the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system.
Identify key facts in and take notes from a non-fiction text.

GEOGRAPHY:

To develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
To identify the names and locations of the countries in the West Indies.

MEMORY WORK:

Geography: We'll continue memorizing the names and locations of some countries in the West Indies. A hard copy of this map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the corresponding song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.

History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 21 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond.
